Wear eye & ear protection when mowing the lawn.
Always make sure you have read the operating guide for your lawn mower. The better you understand how to use your lawn mower, the safer you will be.
Do not cut more than 1/3 of the grass’ height when mowing the grass. Set the height adjustment to that level before starting.
Never run over anything other than grass with your mower. If there is something in the lawn that cannot be removed, such as sprinkler heads or drainage caps then make sure the blade will go over it while the engine is off first. If the blade can’t, then mow around the object.
Always use care on inclines. The push walk mowers should not be used on slopes greater than 15 degrees. If the slope is too steep, then do not mow it.
Never let grass or other debris accumulate on top of your mower, especially if it’s dry. If the mower gets too hot, the grass could ignite and start a fire.
Do not to mow the grass when wet as it can clog up the shoot.
Never run your lawn mower if you notice that it is leaking. The leak is most likely gas or oil. In either case, it can be harmful not only to you, but the grass you are mowing as well.
Never run your lawn mower while you’re on pavement. While on the pavement, objects are much more likely to be thrown at very high speeds.
Always stay clear of a hot engine after mowing a lawn. Mufflers can reach up to 1200˚ F which is hot enough to burn you.
Always make sure the mower is in good working condition. The lawn mower is safest when everything runs properly.
Never continue to run your lawn mower if it starts smoking. Turn it off immediately.
Always keep all four wheels on the ground. Tilting the mower could cause something to unexpectedly fly out from underneath.
Never leave a running mower unattended.
To prevent the engine from accidentally from starting, disconnect the spark plug whenever you are working on the mower.
Never leave your gas-powered lawn mower running in an enclosed area as it can cause the area to fill up with toxins that are harmful for breathing.
Turn off the engine to empty the grass-catching bagger.
Shut off the engine when unclogging the discharge shoot or removing anything from under the mower.
Never use your mower for something it is not designed to do by not allowing anyone to ride it as a form of transportation.
Never modify the lawn mower to make the engine more powerful or blade rotate faster. It won’t cut the lawn any better and will only make your lawn mower more dangerous and could void the warranty.
Never remove a safety feature from your mower. They are there for a reason.
Always follow the maintenance schedule that’s required in the owner’s manual to keep from voiding the warranty.
Do not fill gas tank with ethanol gasoline that is rated above E10, as it can cause damage and affect the mower’s performance and void the consumer warranty.
If possible, find gas without any ethanol in it.
Keep the fuel fresh by adding a fuel stabilizer on the first day you get it.
Purchase unleaded gas with a minimum octane rating of 87.
Never use any gasoline that contains methanol in your mowers.
Do not smoke when filling the gas tank or when operating your lawn mower.
Store gasoline in an approved container with a UL, FM, or CSA label.
Never store gasoline in the house or fill the gas tank indoors.
Don’t store the mower or fuel container near an open flame, spark, or pilot light.
Never fill gas containers inside a vehicle.
Place the fuel container on the ground and away from your vehicle when filling.
Wipe up excess gasoline spills immediately and do not attempt to start the engine until the vapors have dissipated. Move the mower away from the source of the spill.
Do not over-fill the gas tank. Replace gas cap and tighten securely.
Do not remove the gas cap or add fuel with the engine running and only add fuel when the engine has cooled.
Before mowing your lawn, follow some of these clothing safety tips below to prevent any injuries.
Do not wear sandals while mowing lawns. Open-toed shoes cannot protect your foot if it slips into the blade or from other flying objects that the lawn mower might throw.
Do not wear baggy clothing while mowing lawns. Loose clothing can get caught up in the lawn mower controls and other moving parts. Wear long pants to protect your legs from the debris that is being thrown from the mower.
Always wear ear and eye protection while mowing the lawn.
Always wear shoes that provide good traction while mowing lawns. Slipping and falling might cause you to lose control of your mower which could result in it running over something or causing injury to yourself.
Always wear protective gloves when cleaning the mower.
Below are some general safety tips for mowing grass.
Always make sure someone knows where and when you are mowing, whether it’s your parents, spouse, or a friend. If you get injured and can’t move or tell anyone, they will know where to find you.
Always check your lawn before you mow. Look for items such as sticks, rocks, toys, wire, and other objects can shatter and be thrown if they are run over by the lawn mower.
Look for holes in the lawn so you do not step in them and twist your ankle.
Always make sure children and pets are not in the lawn while you are mowing. They usually do not understand the dangers associated with lawn mowers.
Never mow the lawn when it’s dark outside the reason being is you need to be able to see where you are mowing so you don’t run over anything.
Always wear sunscreen on sunny days while mowing lawns as the effects of the sun is more damaging to your skin than you think.
Always drink plenty of water before, during and after mowing lawns. Lawn mowing is a physically demanding activity and your body will not function properly without plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
Never mow on wet grass. Wet grass is slippery. You could fall and slip under the mower and incur an injury.
Never mow a lawn while it is lightning or thundering. If you can see lightning or hear thunder while you are in the middle of mowing your lawn, abandon your mower and get inside. Your safety should always come first.
Be sure to completely read all of the safety information that’s contained in the operator’s manual.
Never tamper with any of the safety devices that come with your mower.
Inspect the safety devices regularly to ensure they are operating properly.
Be careful of any children while mowing as accidents can occur.
Keep children and people out of the area of operation.
Do not assume that children will remain where you last saw them. Expect the unexpected.
If children are in the area, try to get a responsible adult to watch them while you are mowing.
If you should see a bystander while mowing, wait until they are in the clear of the mowing area before mowing in their direction as debris can be thrown and injure them.
If someone needs to talk with you while mowing, turn off the machine first.
For safety reasons, turn off the mower when crossing a sidewalk or driveway.
Before you begin to mow, you will have to make a decision on which method of mowing you prefer when cutting the lawn. There are three types and they are: mulching, side shoot, or collect clippings using a catcher. Many of the newer models come with these options. You will also need to decide on a pattern when mowing your lawn.
Mulching
One advantage of using the mulch option is that the clippings will act as a fertilizer which is good for your lawn. As you mow the clippings stay where they are. Using this option you will not have to rake or collect any of the clippings.
Side Shoot
Using the side shoot option will allow the grass to be mowed and the clippings will be discharged via the side shoot. After you have completed mowing, you will have to rake them up and can save them as mulch or place them in the proper container for disposal based upon your local ordinances.
Using The Catcher
Using the catcher option will allow you to mow and the clippings will be discharged in the catcher that is attached behind the mower. You can save the clippings as mulch for later use or you can empty the catcher contents in a container for proper disposal based upon your local ordinances.
There are some basic reasons why a lawn mower may not start. It’s generally at the beginning of the mowing season when you bring the lawn mower out of storage that this problem comes up and it’s very frustrating. Below are some handy tips for some causes of why a lawn mower may not start.
Old Gas. If you failed at the end of the prior mowing season to empty the gas out of the mower, this could be the problem. Drain out all of the old gas. Check the spark plug to ensure that it is not wet. If not, fill the tank with fresh gas. Try starting the mower. It may take some extra pulls.
Air Filter Is Dirty. Check that the air filter is cleaned. If not, clean it or replace it with a new one.
Spark Plug Is Wet. The lawn mower will not start if the spark plug is wet. You will need to clean the plug by removing it from the engine. Clean the plug using carburetor cleaner and let it dry. Reinstall the spark plug and try restarting.
Fuel Filter Is Clogged. If the fuel filter is clogged it will not let gas flow properly through the carburetor. Remove the old one and install a new fuel filter. Try restarting.
Check The Carburetor. The last of these handy tips is checking the carburetor for any corrosion. If there is some, it needs to be replaced. Another possibility is that inlet needle is stuck when the carburetor bowl is empty. Check to determine if this is your problem. You will need to replace the inlet needle and seat. However, before you replace these parts, check to determine if there is no corrosion on the carburetor. If not, replace the parts. If yes, replace the carburetor.
Build Up of Clippings and Debris. Clean the underside of the mower deck.
Prior to every spring, you will need to do some maintenance to your mower to get it into shape for the mowing season. Take a look at the video below for some great tips.

While using a lawn tractor or other type of riding lawn mower can significantly reduce the amount of time needed to care for your lawn, it’s important to thoroughly understand the machine so that you can safely operate it. Because lawn tractors and riding mowers move much faster than a walk-behind mower, all it takes is a small lapse of attention to cause an accident or an injury.
Read the owner’s manual prior to using the machine for the first time. It will provide information when to perform certain types of maintenance and at what intervals. This is important so that you do not invalidate the warranty.
Wear goggles or other eye protection.
Wear sturdy shoes – no sandals or bare feet.
Wear pants that completely cover your legs – jeans will work fine.
Wear protective gloves on your hands.
Inspect all wearable parts before starting.
Tighten any loose screws or bolts.
Do not mow in reverse unless it’s absolutely safe to do so.
Below are some basic safety tips to read before you even start mowing your lawn using a riding mower.
Keep hands and feet clear from rotating parts or under the machine when it’s still in the on position.
Allow only responsible people and those who are familiar with the instructions to operate the mower.
Clear the area of all rocks, wire, toys, etc., which can be thrown by the blade(s).
Never carry passengers.
Be sure the area is clear of bystanders. Stop the mower if anyone enters the area.
Avoid discharging clippings toward anyone or against a wall.
Stop the blades when crossing graveled areas.
Slow down when turning.
Don’t leave the machine running when unattended.
Understand all of the components of your riding mower or lawn tractor, and thoroughly read its operation manual before ever starting the machine.
Check to make sure that the mower’s operator-presence control system, a safety feature that shuts off the blades when the operator dismounts the machine or rises from the seat is functioning properly.
Know how to stop the lawn mower engine quickly in the event of an emergency.
If your lawn tractor is equipped with a rollover protective structure (ROPS), be sure that it is installed properly. Never operate a ROPS-equipped tractor without this protective structure in place.
Confirm that the mower’s blade drive belt is set at the proper tension and that it is free of debris.
Check for proper functioning of the interlocks that prevent the lawn mower engine from starting while the mower is in gear or the blade is engaged.
Do not remove or disable guards or other safety devices.
Dress properly for the job. Always wear substantial shoes or safety boots, long pants and close-fitting clothes. Wear heavy work gloves to protect your hands when handling the blades and other items that might be sharp or have nicks or metal burrs on the edges.
Before you start mowing, clean up the area and clear the lawn of pets and people, especially children.
Below are some safety tips while using a riding mower on a slope.
Don’t mow on a side of hill if the grade is greater than 5 degrees.
Don’t mow uphill if the grade is greater than 10 degrees.
Never mow down a slope greater than 15 degrees.
Never attempt a turn on a side of a hill.
Mow up and down and not across any slope to prevent tip overs.
Watch out for ruts, holes, bumps, rocks or any hidden objects. Tall grass can obscure hidden obstacles.
Use the low ground speed so you will not have to stop or shift while on the slope.
Do not mow on wet grass as tires may lose traction.
Keep the machine in gear when going down slopes. Do not coast.
Avoid stopping, starting, or turning while on a slope. If you should experience the tires losing traction, disengage the blade(s) and proceed slowly straight down the slope.
Keep all movements on slopes slow and gradual. Do not make sudden changes in speed or in direction, which can cause the machine to roll over.
Use extra care when using a grass catcher or other attachments as they can affect the stability of the machine. Do not use on steep slopes.
Do not try to stabilize the machine by putting your foot on the ground.
Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches, or embankments. The machine could suddenly roll over if a wheel goes over the edge of if the edge caves in.
The above safety tips were taken from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. (www.saferproducts.gov)
Below are some basic tips for operating a riding lawn mower:
Fill your gasoline tank only when the engine is cold. If you need to refuel before completing a job, turn off the lawn tractor or riding mower and allow the engine to cool.
Avoid spilling any gasoline during the refilling process, and never smoke or light a match around gasoline.
Before starting your lawn tractor or riding mower, inspect it for loose belts, screws, and bolts or other damaged components.
Always start your riding mower or lawn tractor from the operator’s seat. Never start the machine while standing beside it.
Riding mowers and lawn tractors are one-person machine. Operate from the driver’s seat only, keeping both feet on the tractor at all times, and never carry any passengers, especially children.
Take care not to throw a unit into gear accidentally, which could cause it to jerk ahead unexpectedly.
When operating a riding mower on uneven terrain, use extreme care. Always mow up and down slopes—never across—and avoid sudden starts, stops or turns.
To prevent tipping, decrease your speed when going down slopes or around sharp corners.
Maintain a minimum ground speed and make turns wide and gradual.
Never dismount from or jump off a riding mower or lawn tractor with the engine running. Always observe proper shutdown procedures before dismounting.
Routinely remove any accumulations of grass, leaves or excessive grease to reduce fire hazard.
Following these safety tips as recommended by the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute will ensure that your mowing tasks are as safe and enjoyable as possible.
Below are some safety tips for zero-turn riding mower models. With these models they all come equipped with ROPS (rollover protection system) as standard. Be sure that this feature is in its proper position before ever starting and using the machine.
Read the owner’s manual carefully.
Make sure all safety equipment is functional and utilized.
Never bypass or remove any safety equipment.
Perform regular equipment inspections and replace any parts, tires, belts, blades and fuel system components. Follow operator’s manual instructions for the correct replacement parts to be used.
Have all operators of the machine read the owner’s manual and fully understand the operation of the mower prior to using it.
Allow only the persons who have read the manual and have been given your permission before they operate the machine. This will help to prevent possible injury while the machine is in use by them when you are not present.

A corded mower’s power cord is exposed to the elements the same as the body of the mower. It is vital that you keep an eye out for any potential dangers your cord can cause. This is to prevent any electrical shocks due to exposed cords.
Before each mowing session, inspect your power cord to make sure it’s still properly insulated and to confirm that the cord, connectors and casings are free from any damage. If found, replace the cord.
The extension cord that should be used for all electric mowers should be 14-gauge and does not exceed 100 feet long. Extension cords greater than 100 feet will lose electrical current. When considering on using an electric lawn mower, measure the furthest distance from the power source so that it does not exceed 100 feet. Otherwise, consider using a battery powered or cordless mower.
The biggest reason for people not wanting to use an electric mower is the cord and the possibility of it getting caught in the blade and getting cut or damaged. Here are some tips:
Connect the cord on the side of the handle that is on the same side as the power source.
Cut the grass that is away from the source of the cord in an up and back motion (See the video below on this technique).
Use an extension cord that is 100 feet long and 14 gauge.
If the 100 foot extension cord does not reach the farthest point from the power source, you need to consider using gas powered, cordless or push reel mower.
Knowing the type of mower you need to do the job is important. Related is to know the way you want to mow your lawn. The types will be explained and are as follows:
The self-propelled mowers are those in which the mower actually does the work pushing itself while you guide the direction of the cut. These mowers are useful if you have some difficulty in pushing the mower yourself. They also will work well on hilly terrain as power is driven to all wheels to provide optimum traction. These models are good for small to medium size lawns under 8,000 square feet.
The push behind mowers are those that start and will not move until they are pushed by someone. The individual does all the work for the movement direction and pushing the mower over different types of terrain across the lawn. These models work well on small to medium size lawns. If you should have difficulty in pushing these mowers, consider using a self-propelled or riding mower.
Riding mowers is for large lawns. Any lawn above 8,000 square feet a riding lawn mower should be considered. Be sure to look for in these mowers ease of movement for tight cutting situations. Otherwise, you will need a weed trimmer to finish the job for close areas in the yard where the mower cannot cut.
Another feature of most mowers is that they offer a mulching cut option as they mow. You will need to decide if you want to mulch your yard when you mow or not. Mulching does not require the raking of the grass after a mowing session. You just leave the clippings where they fall as fertilizer which is good for the grass. This type of operation does not require any catcher.
Using the compost feature is cutting the grass with a catcher attached to the back of the mower. The clippings caught in the catcher are used as compost for your garden or anywhere you need some compost.
With any of these types you may experience a higher cost for the feature you want to use on the mower. Some models come with these options and you just have to select which one to use. Some other models you will have to pay extra for the attachments.
Another feature on some models is they come with an attachment that allows for the clippings to go out the side of the mower.
You need to take all of these type features into consideration when deciding on which mower is best for your yard.
Below are some important maintenance tips you should follow:
Be sure to perform the suggested maintenance to extend the life and functionality of your mower. Always refer to the owner’s manual for maintenance not mentioned here.
Inspect the following parts and systems of your mower before each use:
Blade: Inspect your mower’s blade for any dullness or damage. Sharpen the blade if necessary.
Venting System: Clear your mower’s vents and other areas prone to clogging. The most effective method is using compressed air to blast out any grass residue. This should be done after every use.
Mower Deck: Remove any grass buildup on the bottom of the mower. You will likely need to scrape it off using a sharp tool. Another effective way to prevent this thick grass residue buildup from latching onto the bottom of your mower is to spray the deck bottom with cooking oil before use.
Fasteners: Make sure all fasteners, nuts and bolts are tight. Do this often, but especially before you begin to mow.
Wheels: Lubricate your mower’s wheels. This does not need to be done as often as other maintenance – only two or three times each mowing season.
Power System: Inspect your mower’s power system. The inspection methods will vary depending on whether your electric mower is battery powered or tethered with an electric cord.
Realizing all of the benefits of your electric lawn mower is possible with proper care and maintenance. Be sure to adhere to the specific maintenance guidelines in the owner’s user manual. This is the best way to achieve optimal mower performance and lifetime.
It is vital to make sure your electric mower’s starting system is completely disengaged before beginning any maintenance. For a corded mower, this means making sure the cord remains unplugged. For a cordless mower, make sure either that the battery is not in position or that the safety-key is removed.
Electric mowers have been around for decades, so the technology is fully mature-and cheap. They produce no emissions while you’re mowing, and they’re lighter than gas mowers, requiring no tune-ups or oiling or gas to work properly.
Since, the cord keeps you tied to a power source, these models are best suited for small lawns-no more than a quarter-acre. Most corded mowers don’t offer as much power as amped-up gas mowers, so make sure the one you pick can tackle your terrain and lawn size.
Choosing the right kind of electric lawn mower is an important decision, one tends to make with much research and investigation. One source of information is through the user guides easily accessible to all over the internet or even at many showrooms. These guides are properly scrutinized and analyzed for potential buyers to help them make the right decision about any equipment. Similarly, following is a detailed analysis of the factors one must take into consideration when going to buy an electric lawn mower:
Another distinguishing factor found in electrical, lawn mowers is the option of getting a corded or battery operated lawn mower. Either one has advantages and disadvantages associated with them. Such as, even though a corded lawn mower is cheaper price wise, it still has the inconvenience factor of running over the cord while in operation.
On the other hand, a battery operated lawn mower has an edge of not running over the chord, however; you have to ensure your battery lasts long enough to cover the whole lawn. Thus, keeping your preferences and the lawn size in mind, you will have to decide between getting a chorded or cordless lawn mower.
Remember, the cutting radius of your electric lawn mower is inversely proportional to the time you spend on cutting your lawn. If you have a larger cutting radius, it will take you less time to cut your lawn. You have the choice of getting a 14 inch on up to 20 inch mowing deck when you go to buy an electric lawn mower, however, keep in mind that larger cutting decks are more expensive than smaller decks. Decide on which cutting size is best for your needs.
Your lawn clippings need to be either mulched or bagged. Since it depends on the user’s preference as to what they would prefer, it is best we discuss the advantages and disadvantages here. A mulching lawn mower will redistribute finely cut grass to add a much wholesome effect to the whole lawn as it fertilizes it. However, on the other hand, with a mulching lawn mower, you need to mow your lawn more frequently for a neat effect. With a bagging lawn mower, you will have to deal with the clippings, however; you will have a much neater lawn for a long time.
The best-selling cordless lawn mowers will provide information about the cordless or battery operated lawn mowers on the market. If you are a homeowner, you have a chore that you must do every spring, summer and fall, which is cutting the grass. You may live in an area that is concerned about the environment and using a battery operating mower may just fit your need. Battery or cordless mowers are Eco-Friendly and more quieter than the gas powered models.
If you are considering a battery powered operating mower, you need to do some homework first. Some of the decisions you will need to make are mentioned below:
Blade cutting width – The wider the blade the less passes are required to mow the whole lawn.
Battery operating cutting time – The mowing time between battery charges. Will a single charge complete the mowing of the entire yard.
Adjustable cutting heights – Allows for taller grass to be cut without causing damage to the engine.
Weight of the mower for storage – The lighter the mower the easier to push and to hang up for storage.
Your budget – Determines which battery powered mower you can afford with the appropriate features.
All of the above are important factors in determining the proper battery powered mower for your mowing needs. Each of these features may cause the price of the mower to be more expensive. So, your budget will also play an important role in the decision making process.
This article includes information about the sixteen top selling battery operating lawn mowers on the market. By using a comparison chart you can glance at the features of all of them. Look over each feature and select the model or models that may fit your grass cutting needs.

This is an excellent question. To answer it will be determined by each homeowner. The critical factors depends upon the following:
Yard size – Not every yard is the same size.
The rate of grass growth – Varies from area to area.
The climate and amount of rain– Varies depending upon location during the growing season.
If you should have a small yard, you might consider using a push reel mower. It’s also Eco-friendly and does not use a battery or gas to operate.
To determine if using a battery operating verses a gas powered mower you will need to know the following:
Cost of gasoline being used for the mowing season
Cost of oil use
Cost of replacing the fuel filter if it has one
Cost of using fuel stabilizers
Cost of replacing the spark plug
Time/cost in performing the oil, and spark plug maintenance or having it done.
With the battery powered models you will need to know the following:
Cost of replacement batteries
How long does a battery last before it needs to be replaced
Charging time of a depleted battery
Will the battery mow the yard on a single charge
In some cases, it may be a wash for using the battery verses the gas powered mowers after the cost comparison. However, in many situations, most homeowners probably will save some money using the cordless verses the gas powered models. This is especially true for the environment as battery powered mowers does not emit fumes into the air as compared with the gas mowers. Many cordless mowers are less noisy than their gas powered competitors which saves your hearing.
Below is the comparison chart for the eighteen most popular cordless mowers. You can easily compare them looking for some specific features. All of the models are CARB compliant. The prices listed in the chart are subject to change do to any discounts being offered at the time the order is placed. The time of season will also have a bearing on the price and discounts being offered by the seller.

Yard Size
The size of your yard will be the deciding factor if a cordless lawn mower is right for you. Yard sizes in excess of 8,000 square feet will require a battery with sufficient run time to allow you to finish mowing on one charge. Otherwise, you may require a second battery to finish the job. Some models do come with an extra battery which will extend the run time.
If you have a small lawn with plenty of shrubbery or trees to cut around, consider a mower with a narrower cutting path. For Larger, rectangular or square lawns will benefit from a mower with a wider cutting path.
Another factor to consider is the yard level or near level. If it is, no problem. However, if you should have a large slope greater than 15 degrees, you may have some difficulty in cutting the grass normally. For this type of terrain you will have to mow differently. You should read the owner’s manual for this information. If it’s missing, contact the manufacture.
The power of the cordless mowers has improved over the years, but, the gas powered models will provide the power until the gas is all used up. Using the cordless model, you may see or hear the engine perform at a less proficiency as the battery power is being drained.
The batteries (according to the chart above) provide power from a variety of times and average about 40 minutes before they need to be recharged. Some models come with an extra battery which will extend the cutting time.
A great feature about these cordless models as they do not require an extension cord to lug around which is a huge plus.
How does the performance of the cordless models compare with the gas powered? Generally speaking, they are on par with them. Many of the battery mowers have a single lever for height adjustment of the entire deck, verses wheel by wheel on gas mowers.
Another important factor is how the mower disposes of the grass clippings. Cordless mowers can have a rear discharge bag, a side discharge chute or a mulching option. Gas powered mowers also offer the same options. With the mulching option, the clippings can stay on the lawn without having to rake them up after the mowing session.
Most of these mowers do not have a self-propelled option. The mower requires you to push it using your own strength. However, there are some that do have this self-propel function. This option though might come at a higher price.
Most of the cordless models require the use of a key to start verses the gas powered that use a pull of the cord. Some gas-powered models do come with an electric start feature.

You need to take into consideration the mower design of the model selected. The materials like the cutting blade is made of will make the mower heavier or lighter for pushing. This will make it resistant to gouging, nicks, and scrapes. Also, a heavier mower will be difficult for homeowners who have issues pushing a heavy machine around with a full bag of clippings.
To aid in this situation, look for a model with large wheels. This will make the mower easier to turn and push if you should have a lengthy lawn.
After you have selected a model, contact the support area and find out more information about how the warranty applies to the specific model. Under what conditions does the warranty cover? What location do the warranty repairs take place? What is covered under the warranty? What actions can cause the warranty to be voided? These are just a few questions you might want to ask the representative. Ask other questions regarding the model you have some concerns about. Before purchasing, you want to feel good about buying their product.
Rate the rep responses to your questions on a scale of 1 to 10. This will help you get a feel of how they will treat a potential customer of their product. If you feel comfortable, then consider buying this mower as this company will give you great service and support. If on the other hand they do not give you good answers, then consider the second choice and contact that company by asking them the same questions. You could do this with all of the models you are considering, and then make your selection.
The reason for doing this is that you are paying a lot of money for a machine that is supposed to cut your lawn. The grass grows regardless if the mower is ready to function or not. Some companies are better in providing good customer service verses others. You will have to decide on which one does the job best.
A cordless mower is an Eco-friendly machine that is a better alternative to a gas-powered mower. If you should live in an area where they require residents to use Echo-friendly mowers, this will meet the condition and do the job well. The bottom line for you is to determine which cordless mower is the right one for your cutting needs.
There is very little maintenance that must be performed with the battery lawn mowers. This is where you will experience some savings over the gas-powered mowers. You will need to recharge the battery after every mowing session, sharpen the blade periodically, and clean under the deck. Other than that, there is nothing else to do regarding maintenance. The only cost for battery mowers is that the battery will have to be replaced at some point in time. Find out the cost of the replacement battery.
Battery: Never completely discharge the battery. Doing so will reduce its storage capacity. Keep the battery consistently charged, but be aware of your battery’s charging system type. Most battery charging systems feature a smart charger. The smart charger knows when your battery’s charge has reached full capacity, and subsequently protects it from being overcharged. For all other chargers, remove your battery once it has reached its full charge to prevent damage.
Below are some helpful tips:
Be sure to clean the mower decks bottom prior to storage. Use a sharp scrapper to clean. To prevent future buildup, spray the underneath with cooking oil.
Check the blade for dullness and damage.
One additional spot check you should do before any mowing session is to look for any loose screws or bolts and tighten if found.
Make sure the components of your battery’s charging system are not damaged. Check the charger, its cord and battery frequently for any new wear or tear.
In the off season, store your battery according to the instructions in your mower’s user manual. Most batteries can remain off the charger in the winter, but may require maintenance every month or two. This maintenance often consists of simply charging the battery to full capacity, and then returning it to storage.
At the end of the season, just place the mower in the designated space or area.

There is probably one chore that some homeowners do every spring and summer and that is to cut the grass. Some like doing this job while others wish for winter to come soon. How one goes about doing this task will vary from homeowner to homeowner. Some hire a landscaping company to cut the grass, while others do it themselves using a gas riding, gas push, electric push, cordless push and push reel mower model.
They all will do the job. This article will point out some of the best-selling push reel lawn mowers and the benefits of using a push reel mower instead of the standard gas powered mowers that most homeowners use for the job.
It all boils down if one enjoys cutting the grass or it’s something to check-off the chore to do list.
The following topics will be covered for further reading:
The basic operation of push mowers is the blade is connected to a rotating or chain cylinder. As you push the mower forward the blade moves and cuts the grass using a scissors-like shearing action that cuts the grass instead of chopping or tearing. These units provide a superior quality of cut over gas powered mowers.
Below is a comparison chart of the top fifteen selling push reel lawn mowers on Amazon. The comparison chart shows at a glance some of the features like manufacture, rank, cutting width, cutting height adjustment range, warranty, weight, price, model number, and if it’s CARB compliant. This should help you in trying to find out which model is the best for your lawn.
There are ten manufactures of push reel mowers on this chart with Great States having the most – at four models. Other manufactures include: American, Best Choice, Brill, Fiskers, Gardena, Scotts, Steel Products, and Sun Joe.
The cutting heights range from .5 inches to 3 inches. The model that cuts the grass closest to the ground is American 1204-14 .5” to 1.5” and Great States 204-14. The model that cuts the grass highest from the ground is Fiskars model 62016935J at 4 inches, and has the most settings from 1 inch to 4 inches.
The cutting widths vary from a low of 14 inches to a high of 20 inches. The model with the narrowest width is American 1204-14 and Great States models 104-14 and 304-14, all with 14 inch widths. The models with the widest cutting width at 20 inches are Best Choice SKY1245, Scotts 2000, Steel Products SP-PM2000M and Sun Joe MJ502M.
The warranties vary from 1 year to 4 years. The model with the best warranty at four years is Greenworks 25062. The average warranty for most models is two years.
The weight of these mowers varies from 18 lbs. to 52 lbs. The 18 pound model 78371 is by Brill. The 52 pound model 62016935J is made by Fiskars. The Fiskars model uses a chain rotating method verses the rotating cylinder as the other models use.
The prices on these models will vary from time to time based on any discounts being offered at the time of purchase. The prices range from $70.99 the lowest to $190.99, the highest. The American 1204-14 model is the lowest at $70.99 with a 14” cutting width and Fiskars model 62016935J with an 18” cutting width is the highest at $190.99.
Since these mowers have no auto drive they are powered by the individual or man power. Most are designed for easy pushing and at the same time provide exercise which is good for the body. If it’s on a warm day you will work up a satisfying sweat but not leaving you feeling exhausted. Because they do not have any noise, you can use this mower early in the morning when it’s cool and not have to worry about bothering the neighbors.
The push reel mowers make the grass look better than lawns being cut with gas powered models which should make you the envy of your neighbors as it will be a cleanly cut lawn. Remember, as you are pushing the mower, it is snipping the grass instead of chopping and tearing it verses the other models. The push reel mower is the only model that snips and not chops, just like a pair of scissors. When you are finished with the lawn, you feel great and notice the results of how the mower had mowed the lawn nice and cleanly.
A huge advantage of these mowers is that they do not emit any pollution such as gas emissions since they don’t have any. So, if you are concerned about the environment choosing between power and manual, it’s a done deal for you. Go manual. Since no emissions are emitted, these mowers are always CARB compliant in California and other states that have laws against pollution.
Most home owners are not aware of what happens when using a rotary power mower. It cuts the grass by chopping and tearing the grass as the mower is being pushed. The reel mower cuts the grass by snipping it cleanly just like a pair of scissors.
The torn and shredded grass leaves it vulnerable to disease and insect attacks. Grass that is cut by snipping allows it to heal faster and is less vulnerable to disease and insect attacks, thus a healthier lawn.
A nice benefit of a push mower is that they are quieter. They can be used at any time. You can cut early in the morning or in the evening without disturbing your neighbors as they don’t give off noise and gas emissions. It’s better for you as well since you don’t need to cut the grass during the heat of the day.
The push reel mowers are simple machines and do not need hardly any maintenance. You just push it and blades spin around and cut your grass. That’s it. No pulling starter cords or priming the engine before you can mow. Just start walking and–bam!–you’re cutting the grass. Also, you’ll never have to buy gas, oil, or spark plugs ever again. You don’t have to change the oil and be concerned about adding gas into a hot engine. The only maintenance you will have to perform with your push reel mower is blade sharpening. Even that is once every five (5) years or so.
Generally, push mowers are less expensive than the gas powered models. You can get pretty good models for under $100. Some wider cutter models may cost a little more. The price range I have found is between $75 and $190 dollars. A second area of savings is not having to buy gas, oil and spark plugs and keeping extra of these items on hand. You do not have to worry about storing extra gas which makes it safer in not worrying about a fire or spillage.
A third area of savings is on fertilizer. The grass cuttings act as a fertilizer saving you lots of money in not having to fertilize the lawn. Most push reel owners just leave the cuttings on the lawn without using a catcher or rake.
These mowers will not turn into a death trap like power models. The statistics have shown that more than 75,000 Americans, or about 10,000 which are children, are injured in a lawn mowing accident annually. Seventy five people die from these accidents every year. A power mower can shoot a hidden rock like a projectile traveling up to 200 miles per hour which can take out an eye.
The fast moving blades have injured toes and hands. When the mower is off after the grass cutting, the engine is still hot and can cause burns when touched. While, there are some dangers using the reel mower, they are much safer than power mowers. When you stop, the blades also stop. If a twig or rock is run over, it just jams the mower blade for easy removal. Another advantage is there are no hot engines to burn you on.
Some home owners bag the clippings and use them for mulch after a mowing session or have a basket attached that will catch the clippings as they mow. There are some models of push reel mowers that come with this attachment. However, they do not work well and many models do not come with a catcher at all.
You may want to consider in not using a bag catcher with your push reel mower. Why? Most lawn care experts agree that you should not bag the clippings and just leave them in the grass. The reason is that the clippings are a fertilizer for the lawn. They provide the same beneficial nitrogen, phosphorous, and potassium nutrients that come in commercial fertilizers, accept that they are free. What a deal!
The size of your yard will determine if a push reel mower is right choice for you. Most experts agree that if your yard is greater than 8,000 square feet, you should consider using a gas powered push or riding mower.
For medium to smaller size yards, a push reel mower should be considered. For the average size yard will take anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes to cut using the manual reel mowers.
The characteristics among brands will vary in the following ways:
Weight – How heavy will it be when you are pushing it? Get a feel of it at the store.
Cutting Width – The longer and wider the blade, the heavier it will be, but less passes will be required, and you will get the job done much faster.
Cutting Heights – What is the range of heights that you can adjust the blades up or down? This is important as the grass gets taller it will become more difficult for you to cut the lawn as jamming may occur. Each model has a different cutting height adjustment level. Determine your need first before buying.
Direction of Grass Spray – Does the grass spray behind the mower or out in front? The latter is better as the grass clippings will not be covering your feet as you mow.
If your lawn should have lots of bumps, then the push reel mower will not do a good job of cutting because the wheels will not be able to get some good traction to move the blade. You may have to use a tool to complete the job like a weed-wacker if happens to be your situation. Push mowers work best on lawns that are maintained well. These mowers have issues in cutting long grass.
If this should be the case, a power mower should be used. Don’t let the grass get too long before you cut it with the push reel mower. Try to maintain the height of the grass up to the maximum adjustment on the mower. Otherwise, you will be using a power model to do the job.
Using the push reel mower will mean cutting your lawn more often during the mowing season at least twice a week.
Manual reel mowers work better on certain types of grass than others. Most reel mowers have a hard time handling extra thick grasses like Zoysia, St. Augustine, and Bermuda. If your lawn is made with one of these types of grasses, don’t fret, you’re not necessarily relegated to just gas-powered mowers. Heavier, more powerful manual reel mowers are available and will get the job done. Getting a mower with seven blades will do the job well on these types of grasses.
You can also try adjusting the height of the reel mower’s blades to the highest position can also prevent the mower from getting bogged down in the thick grass.
For normal types of grasses, you can use four or five blade push reel mower.
The biggest maintenance concern for owning a push reel mower is keeping the blades sharpened. They should be done prior to storing the mower away for the winter. Below is an excellent video showing how this is done. Take a look! Sharpening Push Reel Mower Blades.
The push reel mower blade will need sharpening if you should see any of the following conditions:
The grass is not being cut cleanly
Streaks
Stragglers
The cutting unit is noisy
It’s that time of year
Some units can be sharpened by using the “backlapping method”. The video above shows this type of method. However, in some cases, you must actually grind the blades and bedknife. Before doing any sharpening of the blades, always wear protective eye-ware (safety glasses) and gloves. If you do not want to sharpen the blades yourself, you can take the unit to a local shop that performs this type of work. Be sure to do this before the starting of the growing season or at the end.

Welcome to the world of lawn mowers. Lawn mowers are a great invention; especially if there are local ordinances requiring you to keep your lawn cut. Our grandparents were challenged with the sickle and scythe and great skill to cut everything evenly at the same height. Unless you wish your lawn to be a hiding haven for small rodents, a lawn mower will help you maintain your lawn at a height during the growing season that falls within the village code and expectations of neighbors.
To help you find the best lawn mower for your lawn cutting needs and to increase your knowledge of mower care, we provide some mower maintenance tips, customer reviews and purchase links.

If you like to exercise, and are concerned about the environment, then using a push reel lawn mower to cut your lawn is just for you. They are Eco-friendly because they use no fuel, and no oil to emit any harmful carbons into the air and saving the environment.
Using a push reel mower requires the operator to use their own power and walk behind when mowing the yard which provides healthy exercise. It can be difficult to cut the grass if the grass should be tall and if the owner has any medical issues with their arms, legs, shoulder and back.
Push reel mowers should only be used on small size yards or lawns.

When using this type of mower you need to wear some protective coverings like:
Gloves
Long Pants
Strong Shoes
Protective Eye-ware
Push Reel Mower Concerns
There are some concerns with using a push reel mower. Before mowing, you must clear the yard of any twigs and small branches that may have fallen from nearby trees. This helps the cutting blade from clogging up. Should you live in an area surrounded with lots of trees, than using a push reel mower is not for you.
