Models of Blowers

Gas Powered Leaf Blower

Gas Powered Leaf Blower

The models of leaf blowers come in four basic types:

  • Battery
  • Electric
  • Gas
  • Backpack

Back To Top of Page

Battery Powered Leaf Blowers

The leaf blowers that are battery powered will provide you with instant start without the pulling of a cord or having an electric cord in your way while blowing debris.

The tool will provide power up to the limit of the time the battery will provide. The blowing times will vary from each manufacture between 10 to 45 minutes, depending upon the battery being used in the tool. You may consider buying a backup battery to extend the work time so that you can complete the job all in one day.

Another negative about battery models is that the battery requires charging after every use. In some cases, recharging the battery will take up to four hours or more, again depending upon the battery.

Electric Powered Leaf Blowers

Electric Powered Leaf Blower

Electric Powered Leaf Blower

The electric leaf blowers will vary from the amount of amps the motor will produce. The speeds can be varied depending upon the blowing situation. The tool will start immediately and requires no gasoline or battery to power it.

The biggest drawback to electric leaf blowers is that it must be connected to a power source with the use of an extension cord. Be sure to purchase the extension cord based on the recommendation in the owner’s manual. You cannot use an extension cord that is greater than 100 feet or you will begin to experience a loss of power for each foot longer than 100 feet.

Be sure that the extension cord being used will allow you to reach the furthest point from the electrical source of the area that needs to be blown. If not, you might want to consider using a gas-powered or battery powered leaf blower.

Gas Powered Leaf Blowers

Gas powered leaf blowers are the most popular models being used today. They can provide sufficient power for you to complete the job all in one day, without having to refill the gas tank on most models.

The biggest deficiencies of gas powered leaf blowers are:

  • Need of Gasoline
  • Oil
  • Maintenance
  • Proper removal of old gas
  • Storage of extra gasoline
  • More expensive than battery or electrical powered models

It’s always best with gas models to add a gasoline stabilizer to the fuel which will extend the freshness of the gas. Add the stabilizer to the fuel when you get a fresh batch of gas. By adding a fuel stabilizer you extend the life of the gas for up to one year. The same is true for gasoline being stored for later use. If the storage time of gasoline is longer than thirty (30) days, it is considered old and needs to be replaced with fresh fuel if a fuel stabilizer is not added.

If you know that your gasoline will be sitting around for a period longer than thirty days, it’s recommended a stabilizer to be added into mixture. Otherwise, you will have to dispose of the old gas based on your local ordinances. Keeping the old fuel longer than thirty days will cause engine problems or difficulty in starting them.

Note: Most of these gas models require octane of 87 and ethanol of no more than 15% and some models 10%. It’s best if you can get gas that contains no ethanol.

Backpack Blower

Back Pack Leaf Blower 2

Back Pack Leaf Blower

A backpack blower actually fits to your back like a backpack you used when going to school. These models generally have more power to blow debris. It makes the leave blowing job much easier especially for large areas. This type of leaf blower is totally powered by gasoline and is the most expensive of all the models.

If you should have a small to medium size areas to blow, the battery, electric or gas powered hand-held models should do fine for these types of jobs.

There you have it, now, a decision must be made by you to decide on which type of leaf blower to use and which is best for your yard.

How To Use Your Leaf Blower

You can use your leaf blower on a still day or a windy day if the wind is blowing in the direction you want to blow the leaves or debris to go. Generally, it is best to wait for a calm day and then go to work.
